Shopping 101

I finally had a successful day of shopping! I rarely just 'go shopping' anymore - taking a day to browse etc. I find that if I am not in the mood to shop, it ain't gonna happen. This is usually obvious right away and I've learned to not fight it. Since there were some things I wanted to get before our trip to LA, this past weekend was my last chance and I tried my hardest to set myself up for success. I woke up early on Saturday and made a game plan that included all of my 'tricks' to having a good shopping experience. Here is Lizz's guide to 'Preparing to Shop'. I hope you find it fun!

  • The Right Fuel: First of all, eat a good breakfast! Caffeine may give you some energy, but be sure you don't mind the using the restrooms wherever you may be going. :) This could be a long day...

  • The Right Outfit: Be sure to wear something comfortable. Your day may entail lots of walking and/or driving, so be sure your outfit is good for moving around and sitting. Also, make sure it isn't annoying to change in and out of! This includes accessories that may get tangled or snag clothing.

  • The Right Shoes: When considering your outfit - don't underestimate the importance of the right shoes! Again, you want something comfortable, especially if you'll be walking a lot. But be sure to choose a pair that is easy to take on/off. I don't know about you, but tying & untying my shoes all day long gets annoying - especially if I'm shoe shopping!

  • The Right Look: Although you want to be comfortable, I suggest doing your makeup and hair in a way that makes you feel good about the way you look. You will be scrutinizing yourself under horrible fluorescent lighting all day...but you should be focusing on the clothes and shoes etc. It'd be a shame to pass up a cute dress just because you think you look schlumpy with messy hair. For me this means putting in my contacts and wearing makeup. I do the same when I get my hair cut. :)

  • The Right Bag: Another thing to consider is what bag to carry. I've been carrying a large bag lately, and it gets heavy! You don't want to have to stop shopping because your shoulder hurts or you're annoyed by bumping into things with your bag. I took just what I needed, and transferred it to a small bag that has a cross-body strap so it was easy to carry.

  • The Right Stuff: Make sure you have your necessities. Obviously your wallet and phone, but don't forget any gift cards or coupons you may want to use. I also always carry a hair tie, chapstick, and lotion - things I know I may go crazy without. :)

  • The Right Back-Ups: There are some things you may like to have on hand but don't want to lug around all day. Pack them up to leave in your car - a light jacket (so you can leave your bulky coat in the car), a book to read during lunch, a water bottle, & snacks.

  • The Right Plan: Think about what you are looking for and make a list. Think about which stores you'd like to go to so you can plan a route that doesn't involve excess driving or walking. Meeting a friend for lunch? Choose a place along the route!

Ok, I think that is all of the cheesy advice I have for you today. I can't believe I forgot to take a picture of all the stuff I came home with! I'm sure you'll see it soon enough in my pics from LA - we leave in the morning! :)

  1. All great things to think about when shopping! I always have to pay close attention to my outfit. I don’t want to be cold but I also don’t want to carry around a coat all day. Also I want it to be something I can get on and off easily for trying on clothes. Of course I never actually plan this far ahead so my shopping trips are usually quick! Probably better for my wallet anyways :)

Have a good trip to LA!

  2. You are too cute!! But I love it :) and totally agree with doing hair and make-up before going shopping (and make-up when getting hair cut) unless I want to try things on without buying them! It’s amazing how a little self-esteem will go a long way when trying on new outfits–and usually ends with some nice purchases! :)

I need to take your advice about carrying snacks around because I always end up eating crappy mall food or going through the drive-thru when I know I’ll regret it later! You’re so motivating :)
