A Hike in the Forest

You may think Nebraska is all flat cornfields, but you might be surprised at what you can find! Omaha is right on the Missouri River, so we definitely have hilly terrain as we move towards and away from the river. Once I started running and biking in this city, the hills were definitely apparent!

As I mentioned the other day, I went for a hike with my sister on Saturday.

I fueled up with an egg and cheese sandwich (with hot sauce!).

And then I packed a lunch and some snacks because I wasn't sure how long we would be gone.

My sister picked me up, and we headed out to Fontenelle Forest. Such a great idea! There are 18 miles of trails that cover woods, prairie, and marshland. We got a map that described the difficulty of each trail, as well as how long it was. We were easily able to navigate our way around, and definitely found some difficult (but fun!) trails. You could tell when we were climbing a steep hill because both of us would have to stop talking because we were breathing so hard - sign of a good workout! Although we were working hard, we agreed that it still felt like we were doing something fun, not like we were doing work.

We hiked for 5.5 miles. It felt great to use my leg muscles in a different way and to breathe fresh air! We saw lots of cool stuff, too.

I'm really excited because I just got a discounted membership to Fontenelle Forest (and Neale Woods) through my work! The entrance to the trails is $7 for adults, but the fee is waved if you're a member. Expect to see me there often!
