The First Half of the Weekend
Hello from the end of a long weekend! I'm not sure why I've been so bad about blogging lately, but I'm hoping to get back into the rhythm this week!
A lot has gone on this weekend! I'd like to back up to Friday because I went somewhere new (to me). My friend Laura suggested going to a restaurant called Surfside that neither Katie nor I had been to. Surfside is a casual seafood restaurant right on the river. It was a gorgeous night so we thought it would be nice to sit outside next to the water.
Laura warned me that they have a very limited menu (fried catfish, fried chicken, and a few sides) so I ate some crackers and hummus before leaving the house. I ordered a (giant and delicious) margarita, a side of coleslaw and an order of corn fritters - none of which I was able to finish.
The corn fritters reminded me of funnel cake with corn kernels mixed into the batter. They were delicious with honey drizzled on top. Definitely more like dessert than dinner!
Katie in deep thought over her chicken.
I was surprised by the nice views of the woods! I also noticed a paved trail near the river, so I may have to check it out for running!
The evening weather was perfect for hanging out in the hammock - which is exactly what we did when we got home.
I got up early on Saturday to make breakfast for Katie and myself. I made a sweet potato hash with peppers, onions, and MorningStar Farms soy sausage. I also had an English muffin - one half with cream cheese and the other half with butter. With coffee, of course.
We enjoyed breakfast on the back porch with Stella.
After breakfast we headed out to the new Farmer's Market at Midtown Crossing. I'm really excited about this new market because it is only a mile from our house. It's actually located next door to my work!
The market seemed a little bare - more crafts & baked goods than produce, but it's still early in the season. We got a few more plants for our garden, but what really caught my eye were some beautiful peonies.
I was so excited to finally use my tall yellow vase! I put these in the bedroom and they make the whole room smell good!
Then we spent a couple of hours doing yard work, including planting the pepper, tomato, and basil plants that we purchased at the market.
And Katie taught me how to use the string trimmer. I kinda felt like a badass.
After all of that, Katie left for a little weekend trip with some of her buddies and I left on a little errand at the Apple store...
Yay, a new computer!! I've been using a hand-me-down desktop for the past couple of years, and I decided that a laptop will make blogging and other projects easier. Of course, now that I have a car, I have the opportunity to go to the bookstore or a coffee shop anytime I'd like, and it'd be nice to have a computer to use while I'm there. This is the debut blog post from the new computer! Since I'm not stuck at the desk in our office, I've been working on this from the couch. It's been nice to watch crappy TV while I write this.
Saturday night was spent at a really fun (and nontraditional) bachelorette party for my friend Kelli! (You might remember Kelli and Bryson from the Blarney Stone 5k.) We went to a nearby bar that has a patio and a sand volleyball court. The first few hours of the night were for 'girls only', but then Kelli's fiance and some other male friends were invited to join us for volleyball. It was a wonderful, laid back night with friends I don't see nearly enough!
Looking back on it, Saturday was a very busy day! It's no wonder I slept through my 7AM running group meet up on Sunday.
I'll recap Sunday and Monday in tomorrow's post. Now I'm going to decompress from the long weekend and prepare for work in the morning. Just typing that makes me sad that the weekend is over.

Surfside! My grandparents used to live really close to there on River Road. I believe their old house has now been taken over by the new owners garden knomes.

Ah, too funny!! It’s really neat over there. I went to Hummel Day Camp growing up, but that’s all I’d really seen of the area. It never ceases to amaze me how ‘big’ Omaha is…so much left to discover!
