Puppy Love
Guess what we got...
A PUPPY!
This is our new little boy. We got him from the Humane Society yesterday, and he is so sweet. We were told he was a Boston Terrier / Italian Greyhound mix, but I'm having a hard time seeing it yet.
All I see is puppy.
He's 7 weeks old and 4 pounds. Stella is about 8 pounds, so I have a feeling he'll be bigger than her soon!
Since Stella is so small, I tend to think of her as a puppy, but now that we have an actual puppy around, it's apparent that she is not. She listens to me and follows commands. She isn't as rowdy. And she pees outside. The puppy wants to play with her so badly, but she is not having it. In fact, I'm pretty sure she's not very keen on the whole puppy idea.
She will let him sleep next to her...as long as he is in a separate bed.
I just want them to snuggle!
Along with getting these 2 to get along, we also need to think of a name for the puppy! The Humane Society was calling him 'Mackerel' which just seems kind of weird to me. Isn't that a fish? We've been listing off every name in the book, but nothing seems to be sticking. I've found myself gravitating towards names with 'B' or 'R' sounds. We liked Nomar, but decided it would be confusing when you try to tell him "No!"
I think right now Rocco is my top choice. But we've also tossed around Artie (the 'Artois' to go with Stella), Quincy, Barnaby, Rufus, Howie, Bosco, Tido and many others. Please, help!! Do you have any good names for us?! And do you have any tips to help Stella with becoming a "big sister"?

Congrats! He is absolutely adorable. Now you can convince my husband we need another dog. For some reason he thinks the three kids and one dog is enough work.
We haven’t ever had two dogs, well except for growing up when I was little. But I think they will just start to get along with time.
I like Artie.

He is adorable! Oh my goodness! We’ve been tossing around the idea of getting another dog but can’t decide if we think our current dog would go for it. She’s 10ish and set in her ways. She doesn’t like the kids so we really want a younger dog that will actually play with them.
I like Rocco. I’m not great with names but Mackerel is a strange name for a dog!

Stella is 4 and a half, and I was worried if we waited too much longer she would be an “old lady” and just be annoyed by the pup. Since she still likes to play, I’m hoping we can work it out. But somehow I forgot about the fact that she has always like people more than dogs!

Be still my heart! He is precious! Rocco is a cute name, but I love Artie because it goes with Stella.
We have two cats, and probably the sweetest moment was one time when they were little I caught them sleeping in the same bed. Now they are too big and independent for that, but I almost died of adorableness-overload when that happened.

Adorableness-overload indeed! I would completely freak out if that happened.
I like how you describe them as independent…I’ll have to keep that in mind in case my 2 never become friends!

Oh.my.goodness.that.is.one.cute.puppy! I see “Bruce” when I look at him. But you’re right Artie would be a really really good play off of Stella!
I bet after a few weeks of getting to know each other he and Stella will be cuddle buddies, especially if she isn’t trying to eat him right now. I mean, if she’s just sort of ambivalent about him rather than pissed off, she’ll love him in no time!
(We tried 2 dogs once…but the one we adopted HATED our dog and they fought all the time…he wouldn’t even let Dottie near him. It lasted 6 months and never got any better…so we went back to one dog…I think it would have been a totally different story if they weren’t enemies from the get-go.)

Yesterday I was freaking out because I thought I ruined Stella’s life by getting her an annoying little brother. Perhaps a bit of an overreaction.
I guess I have to allow for some time for adjustment. Today was already better so hopefully we’re moving in the right direction!

OH MY GOD I LOVE HIMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Meg was four when we (my parents) got Skipper and Meg was none too pleased. It took Meg a little while to realize Skipper was there to stay and now they’re inseparable. Use the Cesar Millan method of taking them on long walks together, etc. so they feel like they’re part of the same pack. My dad made sure still treat Meg like she was the #1 dog in the house (behind my parents as “pack leaders,” of course) and that seemed to work well too.

This is exactly what I needed to hear! Stella is 4, too. I am trying to acknowledge her first every time I come home and am sure to give her undivided attention. It’s got to be weird for her…she was my “baby” for so long! Seriously, I started crying last night because I was afraid I’d ruined her life by bringing home the puppy.
But things were a bit better today, and I am definitely going to try Cesar Millan’s advice. Thank you!!!

Yeah, we thought we had ruined Meg’s life and made the biggest mistake ever, and even thought about returning Skipper to the pound. It took a little while for things to settle into place. Stella will live and get over it—she’s a dog! Patience is key.
