Wedding Wednesday – What Will We Wear?

Lots of people ask us if we will both wear wedding dresses. The answer to that is "no." We do not have our wedding clothes picked out yet, but this much is known: I will wear a dress, most likely wedding-ish, and Kate will not wear a dress, but rather a suit or tuxedo.

Now, I'm not saying this should be the case for every lesbian couple, with one woman in a dress and the other in a suit. It's all about figuring out what works for you. One of my most hated questions to receive is, "So, who is the man in your relationship?" I can't tell you how many times I've been asked that. I now respond with a sarcastic, "Oh, maybe you don't know this, but a lesbian relationship is between 2 women. There is no man."

(Adorable vases from Mine!)

Anyway, for any type of wedding between any type of people, I think everyone should wear what makes them feel comfortable, beautiful, handsome, charming...whatever makes them feel like their very best self. So, since Kate does not wear dresses, or skirts, or anything really feminine, it doesn't make sense for her to do so on our wedding day. Why feel awkward and uncomfortable on one of the most important days of your life?!

Plus, she looks really good in a suit. ;)

I, on the other hand, love to wear dresses and am excited to pick out something super duper pretty for our big day. However, until I know where we'll be getting married, I feel like I can't start shopping. Maybe it wouldn't matter to some people, but I think I'd choose to wear a different dress if our reception was in a barn versus at a vineyard versus in a ballroom...

However, I can tell that I am drawn to certain types of dresses. I like a simple silhouette and usually flowy fabric. I do not like bright white, poof, or sheen. I like some beading, but nothing "bling-y". And I've found some lace beautiful, some cheesy, and some hideous. Clear as mud, right?! :)

Here are some dresses that caught my eye:

Also, I plan on wearing flats. I am a couple of inches taller than Kate as it is, so I don't want to exaggerate it. Plus, I'm more comfortable in flats.

We don't really have a "color" picked yet, but I think Kate will have some fun with a bright tie, pocket square, or shoes. I'm not sure about accessories for me, but I know I don't want a veil. I'll probably choose something else for my hair - like flowers or a feathery clip. There is so much pretty stuff to choose from!

I love this. So true. And so good for all of life but especially a wedding.

If I could do it again (with the same man ;) I would totally go to J. Crew. Or Anthro has a new wedding line out too. Or it’s coming out. I love simple too, and not too poof-y.

    • Lots of people have recommended J.Crew. The prices aren’t too bad, and you can order a few and then return what you don’t like. No bridal store?! Yes, please!

  2. It’s so funny – my sister has been having the SAME discussion with lots of her friends (and some of our family) because she just started planning her wedding too!

Tammy & Katie are both not “dress girls” so they’ll probably both wear suits. I actually have only seen my sister in a dress twice – once when she graduated from college and then for MY wedding – bless her heart, she didn’t even complain! – and immediately changed as soon as the reception started.

I think you hit the nail on the head – you should both wear what makes you feel good. After all, it’s your day & why would you want to not be ‘yourself’?!

    • I love hearing about your sister’s planning! I don’t really have anything to compare mine to, so it’s neat to see what other people are doing. :)

      • Lizz,
My sister just sent me a link to this page and it made my day! I just became instantly excited seeing that we’re not the only two out there having the same issues…and that we’re not the only two planning a “normal” wedding for ourselves!

We are planning to have a simplish ceremony on the beach from our hometown on Lake Erie and then a big reception afterwards (we are all about the party).

I don’t have a blog but maybe we should become wedding planning penpals!

        • YES!! I am having such a hard time figuring this all out. I mean, I know we should just “do whatever we want”, but it’s a bit more complicated than that. There is so much to think about!

  3. The Limited also has a great wedding line that is simple, chic and very well priced. I even think that the wedding collection is 40% off right now :)
If I could do it over, I would have done one of these dresses instead of the one that I was harrassed into buying!
