Wedding Wednesday – Colors

Wedding colors are something I'm having a hard time with. Feeling the need to choose just one or two colors is what is vexing me. I guess I don't want to feel limited. And I don't really care for "matchy-matchy".

Then again, I love when things have a certain style and "go" together. However, that's really hard to describe. So to help myself get a better, more concrete idea of what I'd like our wedding to look like, I went to the fabric store. Or stores.

Lucky for me, fabric quarters were on sale for $0.99 apiece! First, I just walked around and grabbed any that I was attracted to.

Whoa!

Then I did a quick sort:"love", "like", and "wouldn't miss". The "wouldn't miss" went back on the shelf.

Next I grouped the remaining fabric by color. If I had some that were very similar, I picked just one and put the others back, promising myself I can always return. I was after a broad representation of things I liked.

Oh my goodness, I was just so excited about this! Fabric is so great...and I think the ones I selected really reflect my style. I was giddy with anticipation as I headed home.

Once there, I spread my stash out on the dining room table and got to sorting and grouping.

When Kate got home, I was grinning ear to ear. I was so happy, I failed to realize that she was in a really bad mood...

"What's this?" she asked.

"Fabric for wedding ideas! Which ones do you like?!"

"I don't like any of them."

GASP. I felt so wounded. It took all of my willpower to keep it together and say, "If you're not in the mood to do this right now, that's fine, but don't tell me you don't like any of them because it will really hurt my feelings."

She struggled to recover with, "Maybe they're just too close together. I guess I like this one."

"Ok."

Then I packed up my treasures and brought them to my sisters and mom who made me feel much better.

We mixed and matched and ooohhhed and aaahhhed and it was everything I dreamed of. We talked about table runners and fabric flowers and wall decorations and wedding quilts. I got excited again. And I didn't worry that I was going to create an ugly wedding.

It's not that I don't care about Kate's opinion. I do, I really do.  But I don't want to force her to have an opinion about something she really doesn't care about. Does that make sense?

And maybe she was just in a bad mood. To her credit, looking at a table covered in swaths of fabric would be pretty overwhelming. It probably looked like one big, gaudy quilt instead of lots of little pieces. I'll give it some time, flush out some of the color scheme ideas first, maybe make a couple of prototype decorations, and then ask her again.

Did you choose colors for your wedding? How many?

  1. yo, don’t you worry, just thank heavens every day you’re not dating a boy. seriously. :) cause there’s at least a slim chance katie might at some point get excited about fabrics. the other day i thought i found the perfect shoes to wear to our “civil ceremony” and i showed them to colin and he was like “is this a joke?”. hours of searching online (instead of working on dissertation), i was so offended! then i told myself “well i’m obviously more fashionable than he is” and felt much better :)

i really like the white fabric with the tiny flowers. and the birds one is cute too but kinda reminds me of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XM3vWJmpfo

on another note, i was hoping this post would be titled “wedding wednesday – dresses i tried on over the weekend”.

    • mine,
I have pictures, leave your email address and I will send them to you.

    • ohmygod, that story about colin better be true because it is the funniest thing i’ve ever heard! i can just picture him glancing up from his computer…”is this a joke?” while contemplating, “maybe she’s been watching so much intervention that she’s high right now…”

i care what shoes you’ll be wearing. just don’t put a bird on them. ;)
