Trader Joe’s Product Review – Mexican
I love Trader Joe's, but I will say that the products are a bit hit and miss. I like to read reviews - both good and bad - to help me decide what to try next and what to skip. I thought I'd share a few of my own, in case you're interested!
- Fat Free Spicy Black Bean Dip - I wanted to like this, but it is just WAY too vinegar-y. Like whoa. Like salt and vinegar chips vinegar-y. But the strong kind. Maybe it'd be better blended with a can of plain black beans. Or maybe Mama Pea's version is worth a shot. But I won't be buying this again. Grade: D
- Corn and Chile Tomato-less Salsa - It's hard for me to call this salsa since there are no tomatoes. I want to call it chutney. Or relish. It's pretty tasty, but very sweet. And not spicy. So it's good with something that is already spicy (and perhaps tomato-y). It pretty much tastes like chow-chow, which is also known as corn relish, so I'm not making any big revelations there.
Grade: B - Cheese and Green Chile Tamales - I was so excited to find vegetarian tamales! And luckily, these did not disappoint. They were cheesy and spicy and ready in just a few minutes. However, the directions are to microwave for 3-4 minutes, but the cheese was bubbling out well before that. I ended up stopping about halfway through to scoop the cheese back in, and then resumed cooking. Grade: A-
- Organic Longboard Tortilla Chip - These tortilla chips are great. They are thin, crispy, and tasty. And the "longboard" shape makes them perfect for dipping! Grade: A
What's on your Trader Joe's "Must Try" and "Don't Waste Your Money" lists?

Kelly did not like that corn salsa. But he likes things with a lot of spice so no surprise.
Avocado hummus & spinach wraps for lunch filled with veggies/cheese/meat. Super good. This week I got the pb & dark chocolate filled wafers and they were just ok. They had a strange aftertaste & they added milk powder or whey or something which always makes me upset.
Kelly recently posted..cinnamon chips

their feta cheese is the best price&taste combination. there are better fetas out there, but not in this price range. except for the one at costco maybe.
i love their indian food in astronaut packaging, but i only like the kind with the chickpeas. and watch out for the one spicy pepper they diligently place in each bag.
i have a love hate relationship with their frozen rice that you steam in the microwave. i love the product, but hate myself for being so goddamn lazy that i can’t make my own rice (we even have a rice cooker!).
their olive spreads are meh. not strong enough for me.
i love their raspberry jam.
the bean taquitos are way too dry, even for me. and you can’t even taste the bean in them.
also, i miss trader joe’s so badly. there isn’t one in durham. there’s one in chapel hill, only about 8 miles away, but i miss having it on the way home. in fact, many nights i open the fridge and utter the words “i wish there was a trader joe’s nearby”.
ps: how do you like that i pretty much write my own blog in your comments?

i’m sorry you no longer have a trader joe’s super close to you. i can totally picture you pouting in front of an empty fridge.

I know you and lots of your readers are vegetarians, but my most favorite item from Trader Joe’s is their frozen Pork Gyoza Potstickers (dumplings). They are delicious! We use them in Lizz’s Chinese Soup recipe and I have steamed them like they serve at PF Chang’s. For you Omahans that remember the wonton soup at the old Imperial Palace – - these will remind you of them. They are that good! Vegetarians be forwarned: The vegetarian version is AWFUL! Get Lizz to make/sell her homemade vegetarian ones – - they are DELICIOUS!
