Beasts of the Southern Wild

Katie and I went to see Beasts of the Southern Wild last night at Film Streams. Kate had read an article about it and was intrigued, but I went in blind, not knowing anything about the story.

I was very pleasantly surprised.

Without giving anything away, the movie centers around a 6 year old girl (Hushpuppy) who lives with her father, pretty much off the grid, in a small community referred to as "The Bathtub". You follow Hushpuppy as she learns all too much about life and get to hear her take on how the universe works. She is fierce and adorable, and you'll just want to wrap her in your arms by the end.

I found the story interesting, the acting incredible, and the set design spot-on. I'll admit that I probably cried more than I laughed, but I wouldn't call it a sad movie. It's hard to describe. It has uplifting parts, but there is a constant undercurrent of sadness. It is moving, for sure. And I highly recommend it.
